The period of transition around the end of one lunar year and the beginning of the new year is said to be a time of particular vulnerability to negative influences. Therefore, at this time we supplicate the dharma protectors and make offerings to them in order to purify any remaining negativity from the past year, to grant us their protection in the present, and to clear away obstacles in the coming year.

You are invited and encouraged to come together to supplicate the protectors on one, two, or all three nights. The atmosphere is charged with their fierce compassionate activity!

Beginning Series with Eileen Kay, Sogetsu Somu Certificate Teacher

The practice of ikebana or the path of flowers is a beautiful art form. It is also a contemplative discipline that brings focus to our mental, physical and spiritual being. With each arrangement, we use all our senses to come into the present moment to connect with space, color, form and our own state of mind.

Classes cover the basics of Ikebana from how to cut a stem to how to place plant materials in a container. There will also be exercises on perception and contemplation to help us find joy, harmony and authentic expression in creating arrangements. Class is open for each student at their own pace, exploring materials, themes, Sogetsu curriculum, and individual curiosity. There will be both beginners and more experienced students in the classes.

Starting in the Fall—A Guided Analytical Meditation Series with Jirka Hladis on the 2nd and 3rd Sunday
There will be seven meetings on consecutive 2nd & 3rd Sundays of the month.
Time: 11am-12pm at Odantapuri, following shamatha practice
Dates: 10 September, 17 September, 8 October, 15 October, 12 November, 19 November, 10 December

Using the Six Techniques of mindfulness of breathing from the Abhidharma tradition, we will train in the vipashyana—the “clear seeing” or “insight”—of selflessness. Each session will include instruction on one technique of mindfulness of breathing, first from the shamatha point of view. Then we will explore how this very same technique can be utilized for the cultivation of vipashyana.

These meditations sessions are open to all. No prior preparation or study is required. No need to attend all the sessions in sequence—these are drop-in guided meditation sessions.

 

 

Lama Tenpa Tuesday Evening Talks and Teachings on the Bodhisattva Path

Starting Tuesday, September 12

 Lama Tenpa will start a new series of teachings on Tuesday evenings at Nalandabodhi on the The Eight Verses of Mind Training by Langri Tanpa.  The teaching will be every Tuesday evening from 7:00 to 8:30, starting September 12.  Sitting is from 6:30 to 7:00.  All are welcome.

Date and Time:  Tuesday evening, starting September 12,  from 7:00 to 8:30.  Talks will start promptly at 7:00 PM but please join us for a brief mediation period from 6:30 to 7:00.

Suggested donation is $15.00 per evening.  The full series of teachings is available for $120.00  Donate via PayPal below, or bring a check or cash for the offering bowl.  No one is turned away for lack of funds.  Contact us about your situation and we will work with you on an affordable option.

The path of wisdom and compassion in Buddhism is called the Mahayana (the great Vehicle). It builds on the foundational teachings of the Buddha by focusing on the Profound Views and Vast Conduct of the Bodhisattvas.

The next course in our series on the Mahayana are the teachings on Yogachara and Vast Conduct.  The “Vast Conduct” teachings focus on the experience of working with mind through meditation and virtuous conduct. This is about “Path” and skillful means! About actualizing!

Buddhist Study Program

The Hinayana View

Buddhism is not a religion in the usual sense of the word. It is a method of investigation that allows you to work skillfully with the positive potentials and negative energies of your own mind. The teachings of the Hinayana, the Foundational Vehicle, represent the most fundamental instructions of the Buddha, which are central to everything that follows. Hinayana studies are basic to any training in Buddhism.   While considered a foundational vehicle, it is a complete path that can lead to life free from suffering.

In the Nalandabodhi Path of Study, Hinayana studies introduce you to Buddhism as a science of mind, or method of investigation.  The Nalandabodhi study curriculum offers two Hinayana courses.  The first course covers the ground or view of Hinayana, and the second covers the Hinayana path and its results.

The Hinayana View
This course introduces you to the Hinayana as the indispensable foundation of the three-yana system of Buddhist study (Hinayana, Mahayana and Vajrayana). Then you will learn the main elements of the Hinayana view, through a detailed examination of the building blocks of the Buddhist science of mind.

Audience: Open to the general public and any and all students of Buddhism.

Becoming Familiar with Dying

Transforming Trauma

Meeting monthly this class will examine the dying process through the dissolution of the elements that constitute us as human beings: Earth, Water, Fire, Wind, Consciousness and Space.

Each class will be divided into two parts. We will begin each class with an overview and discussion of the element that we will concentrate on for the month. In this way, we will have a month to become more familiar with each of the fundamental elements of our existence. The second part of each class will be a guided meditation of the dissolution of the elements leading to medical & subtle body death. The meditation will be accompanied by the playing of Tibetan bowls, which provides a sound environment of safety and security.

Through this process of a month-long examination of each of the elements and the guided meditation of their dissolution we can become familiar with the dying process.

Seven Sessions: Class meets in Boulder, 8:45-11 am. third Saturday of the month; September 23, October 21, November 18, December 16, Jan 20, Feb 17, March 17.

We have had the privilege of offering One Year to Live and other seminars. We find it of great value personally and with others to prepare for our dying, as a skillful and kind way to feel less bewildered, overwhelmed, frightened or in pain at the time of our death.

Sunday 16 July from 11:00-12:00 Contemplative Meditation
This week is an exploration of “egolessness”, the lack of a solid, permanent self. Neil Kolwey will lead the session. He will say a few things about having a healthy “relative” sense of self in order to function in the world as an adult, but that grasping onto a “solid, absolute” sense of self, which we seem to do sometimes (like when we are upset, triggered) is painful and unnecessary. There is no solid sense of self to be found anywhere. We will explore this in a contemplative meditation and see what insights and experiences it leads to.
